This opened up a bit with the use of the of their mobile betting platform, however, the state has had a few issues regarding mobile offerings. Rooms start about $500 a night and gambling there also requires a membership to the Casino Club (or other membership programs).

Keep in mind that offshore betting sites still exist for your use, whether you stay the casino or not. These online sportsbooks will allow you to gain access to more betting lines and options as well as increased odds, better benefits, and excellent customer service. But let’s talk about betting on sports in Greenbrier.

History Of The Greenbrier

Greenbrier, West Virginia, in the southeast region of the state, is home to one of the most luxurious and exclusive casinos in America, The Greenbrier. Built in 1913 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, the Greenbrier was a popular destination for magnates of various kinds during its heyday, even hosting presidential galas and other affairs of the rich and famous.

Located in legendary White Sulphur Springs, The Greenbrier later became the site of a secret governmental bunker (the initiative of which was dubbed “Project Greek Island”) that was to serve as an emergency fallout shelter for the US congress during the Cold War. When The Greenbrier was adding its popular West Virginia Wing to the property from 1959 to 1962, the crafting of the shelter – now called The Bunker – began under the cover of that construction.

The US government formally decommissioned The Bunker in 1992 after a Washington Post story outed its existence, and The Greenbrier has used it as a sort of museum ever since. Guests of the hotel can take daily tours of The Bunker, and it’s highly recommended that you do so if you ever stay at The Greenbrier.

In 2009, The Greenbrier actually filed for bankruptcy, carrying a debt of some $500 million and assets only worth approximately $100 million (mostly the land itself, as the hotel sits on a gorgeous spread of some 11,000 acres). Billionaire Jim Justice, the current governor of West Virginia, purchased The Greenbrier out of bankruptcy, repaid all debts on the property, introduced casino gaming to customers of the hotel, and successfully returned the famed establishment back into the 5-star hotel it had been for so much of the 20th century.

Things To Do At The Greenbrier

The Greenbrier isn’t just a luxury hotel, nor is it just a high roller’s paradise. If you’ve booked a room at the resort and you’re looking for things to do at The Greenbrier, you have nearly endless options.

In addition to offering some 740 or so suites and a fully-fledged casino, The Greenbrier features the aforementioned Bunker, four golf courses (the Old White TPC, the Greenbrier Course, the Meadows Course, and the Snead Course), a gazebo-lined hot spring in the center of the property, the President’s Cottage Museum (26 presidents have stayed at The Greenbrier throughout its history), three professional football fields (used by various NFL teams as preseason practice locations), tennis courts, bowling lanes, shooting ranges, horseback riding trails, hiking trails, and much more.

Guests will also have access to The Greenbrier’s exclusive Mineral Spa and MedSpa facilities, five bars and lounges, nine gourmet restaurants, and 24/7 room service. And, of course, no luxury resort is complete without an assortment of shopping options, so The Greenbrier offers nearly 40 haute couture retail stores and boutiques. There’s even an Art Colony featuring metalwork, leatherwork, woodwork, glasswork, and ceramic pieces for your perusal. (The Greenbrier also has a top-quality medical facility on the property, helmed by famed sports doctor James Andrews.)

Sports Betting At The Greenbrier

Without a doubt, sports betting at the Greenbrier has become the next big thing at the luxury hotel. As the most popular gambling pastime in America, wagering on sports has been making headlines throughout West Virginia ever since the gambling facilities in the state finalized their licensure requirements. Naturally, The Greenbrier was among the first to submit its applications for sports betting in West Virginia, and it thus became one of the first two venues in WV to open its sports betting lounge to the public.

Currently, The Greenbrier’s Fan Duel-themed betting lounge is open during the Casino Club’s standard hours. Monday through Saturday, the sportsbook will take wagers starting at 11:00 AM, while on Sunday, the book opens at noon. Typically, The Greenbrier sportsbook will close an hour or so before the Casino Club itself, generally after the last of the West Coast games come to a close. (Most of the time, this will be around 2:00 PM, though given the exclusive nature of the venue and its dedication to customer service, the sportsbook will stay open as long as bettors have action on existing matches.)

An interesting side note re the history of sports betting at The Greenbrier: West Virginia governor Jim Justice – the owner of The Greenbrier – did not actually sign the state bill (SB 415, aka Article 22D) legalizing and regulating sports betting in the state. Due to his obvious conflicts of interest, Justice neither approved of nor vetoed the law, allowing it to go into effect by virtue of its legislative support and passage.
